quarter sawn sycamore,
Location
SW Virginia

Still having fun exploring the beauty of quarter sawn sycamore. This is a really elegant wood. I'm surprised that you don't see more of it. That may be because it's rather difficult to find from suppliers. Suggestions appreciated on sources you might have.

This box has quartersawn sycamore sides, a lid constructed of walnut, birdseye maple, mahogany, and straight sawn sycamore glued to alder plywood. Plywood bottom is covered with velveteen.

The splines look good, and the box looks well-constructed. Just not sure about the top.

I just picked up a nice piece of QS Sycamore from a hardwood lumber yard and it has some nice fleck to it.
Can't wait to make some boxes just like yours.

I can get all the sycamore I want for pretty good prices at a local lumberyard which sells only locally felled trees. When the local government or a storm takes a tree down, they mill and sell. It's pretty neat. No exotics but a ton of oak, maple, cherry, sycamore, doug fir, and some less common like sweetgum, hackberry, and catalpa. Once in a while they get osage orange but it sells about instantly.

Perty! I like the subtle contrasts of the splines and handle. I want to run my fingers over the different pieces on the top. :)
