Project Information

Last year I made a couple of door stops for the school library. The plan has been since that I make some for the kids teachers and one for their classrooms. I have been informed by my wife that the principal has been maybe dropping hints. Since I use these as practice pieces to play with lathe tools it's kind of fun. I don't get out into the shop nearly enough.

The smaller ones are from 6/4 hard maple. The problem with these is they don't work for doors on houses with some thresholds that put the bottom of the door higher and make up the difference with weather stripping. Should work for the schools doors since they are barely above the concrete. So, two for each of the kids classrooms and two extra, probably for the office since they are propping the doors open with a chair.

The larger ones are 8/4 hard maple. They work on the doors in my house so they should be fine for the kids teachers and a few neighbors.

The wedges on both sizes vary between 5 to 5-1/2" and the handles are ~2" each. Most were turned from a 9" piece of stock. The finish is three coats of boiled linseed oil. They are going to get beaten up so only sanded to 150.

The wand was because my new neighbors were wandering by on their walk and their daughters eyes got big when she saw my daughters wand and I figured, what's one more practice piece. Also, my daughter volunteered me, again. Hard maple finished with mineral oil and wax.

Very nice. Did you turn square stock and turn knobs at both ends, and then cut them on the diagonal to make two stops?

Yep. Any number of video's about this on the internet. I believe the measurements I tried this time were from this one

I tried the more 'pillar' like handles first but they end up looking way to massive. Maybe if I make them significantly smaller in diameter next time? Ah well. They are great turning practice and once you get the stock all squared up and cut they are moderately fast to turn out. I think overall I need to get a little more aggressive in turning down the diameter of the handles. Maybe next run.

Thanks for the comments folks.

Good looking stops !
I've lost track of the number of these things I've made over the years, seems almost as soon as they were in use at
work someone thought they'd look better in THEIR home ;-) A bunch by request, the latest went to the local cancer clinic to keep the nurses backsides safe lol.
Another way to do them is by laminating scrap, my 1st ones were walnut and oak, keeps the offcut pile somewhat under control, amazing how people seem to just love them isn't it ?
