Project Information

I was requested by my Mom to make her a small jewelry box that she can keep on their boat since only has a larger one at the house to use. Her only request was a rough size and that it somewhat match the serving tray that I made my Dad earlier this past summer.

Approximate dimensions are 9"x5"x4.5", and the primary wood is what my lumber dealer calls "Dark Red Mahogany". The top is Sapele since I ran out of the DRM. I inlayed a matching compass rose into the top of the wood with Wenge and dyed white veneer just as I did for the serving tray. The drawer fronts are curly maple that I found at Home Depot. Trim is walnut. I had originally planned on dying all the walnut black, however it ended up being too much, so I had to sand it all back. I used blue velvet to line the interior.

Finish is Shellac followed by paste wax. All in all, a relatively simple box.

I like your inlay work. The rest of the box, too.

Good work Jeff. Your veneer work is looking great and the solids aren't too shabby either.
Your Mom should be thrilled. ...... Nice compass rose.

Great looking jewelry box! I too really like the inlay, and it's nice that it matches the tray's. Your mom is going to love it!

Thank you everyone. I'm fairly happy with the way it came out.
