Project Information

My mother's birthday was coming up soon, and I had no idea what to get for / do for her. Money has been tight, as I am sure it is with many others on this site, so I decided to build her a simple box. Approx 6" square and 3" high with simple mitered corners with cross splines of some mystery wood. Bottom is solid red oak roughly 1/4" thick. Top I think is hickory with poplar cross. Sides are also red oak with poplar feet. Pretty simple, but I hope she'll like it. Enjoy. Oh, and all the stock for this project came from a discarded pallet (except for the poplar cross on the top and poplar feet, that was some scrap I had laying around the shop) hence the mystery wood for the splines.

That is a splendid box, nice job! and even if it weren't, isn't it requisite for Mom's to at least SAY they love whatever gift their kids give them? Or does that wear off as the child ages?

Thanks for the encouraging comments. And as to yours WoodSpanker, you are absolutely right. She would SAY she loved it even if it were just a chunk of old knotty pine. Moms are funny that way. By the way, I love your Yoda reference in your signature.

Thanks again for the kind comments.

Hi neighbor, nice box and I am sure your Mom will love it. My Mom was the same way when you said it could be a chunck of knotty pine and she would say she would love it, as long as I made it for her. I am just over the ridge from you in Chatsworth, well maybe two or three ridges. I grew up in Blairsville, which I hope to move back some day. I am glad to have a fellow LJ as a neighbor, well almost neighbor, close enough for me.

Well, I gave it to her on Saturday and she did in fact say that she loved it. Now to come up with some Christmas gifts to build…..
