I saw this cute animated toy on the Internet somewhere. I tracked it down to coming from Ken Folk's 1998 book, Folk Toys: Patterns & Projects for the Scroll Saw. I bought a copy of the book, and entered the design into Sketchup.
I decided to make 2 design changes to the original pattern. I substituted 3 inch spoked wheels for the 2-1/8" plain wheels, to spruce up the design.
I also changed the 3 geese from being made of 1/4" thick wood, to 3D geese. I used the common scroll technique of compound scroll sawing….......which means you put the paper pattern on 2 sides of a rectangular wood block, saw 1 side first…....tape the scraps back on…....then saw the other side. When you remove the scrap pieces, you get a neat 3D object.
I used maple for all the component parts. I used 0.072" brass rod for the drive rods. I made thin washers from brass sheet, and then soldered them to the brass shaft.
I found 1 mistake in the plans. The 3 pivot holes in the main body and the slider bar should line up with each other…and if you use the book plan they do not line up. It is best to drill the 3 holes in 1 of those 2 parts, then use that piece as the pattern when you drill the other part…....which insures they line up ok.
This is a fun model to play with. I think the grandkids will have a ball with it.
