Project Information
This necklace is from the Disney movie Moana. It is made from pine and constructed using the bandsawn box technique, though I used my jigsaw to do the cutting.
The top, bottom, and middle sections of the box were glued back together before carving.
After carving the rough shape, the two halves were separated with the bandsaw.
I carved the inside and outside of the box and used a gouge to remove a sliver of wood from the top and bottom halves. In the recess made by the gouge, I drilled a pocket for a rare earth magnet and glued the wood slivers back on top. The necklace closes tightly and securely without any visible clasp-just like in the movie.
The magnets are installed in the above picture. Can you spot the wood sliver that was cut out and replaced?
The jewel inside (Heart of Tafiti) is carved from pine and painted with glow-in-the dark paint.
The necklace is hemp string with pearl beads.
I attempted to replicate the blue marbling of the shell using nail polish and water marbling technique but was unsuccessful. I settled on a sparkly blue nailpolish.
