Project Information

Was time to clean out the off-cut bin and this is the result. The box lid is a half lapped Bubinga frame with a section of Curly Maple set in dado's. The lifter is Walnut. The box sides are mahogany with Oak corners. The hinges are Cherry set on Wenge blocks. Thats 7 different species ;-)

Its about 17" long, 6-1/2" wide and 5" deep. The pictures were taken after the initial coat of Danish oil. Once dry it will be sanded to 400 grit (220 now) and get a few layers of Poly.

My first time making wood hinges and really enjoyed the experience.

Thank you for looking.

I like the wood choices. The corner detail looks very different but nice as well as strong. To me, the hinges look a little blocky for the length of the box. Maybe more pins? Of course, I have never made any. Overall a very nice use of 7 kinds of scrap.

Very nice and a lot of different techniques involved. Love the hinges and although they may be a little blocky, they do bring your eyes to them. I really like the way you used the oak as the corners too. A very nice build and a great way to clean up some left-overs. Good job.

The box just screams…...."Pick me up! Open me!"

You don't see half lapped lid frames often but it works and I'm going to have to try it someday

It is an unusual assembly of wood, design, and joinery. It really works.

Great job, I like mixing a lot of wood species myself. It can get busy or disjointed but you did a fantastic job of bringing into into harmony.

The wooden hinges are a nice touch. I have said it about 1000 times, I really need to try that.

Thanks for sharing you cut offs with us.
