Project Information

I needed a bigger desk for my composing, so I decided on this design. It's solid hickory except for the legs, which are laminated plywood with a hickory veneer,

and the top and keyboard plate which are hickory veneered plywood.

The construction features pinned through tenons.

The top is attached with full length hickory cleats.

The spindles for the side panels were constructed with a round mortise and tenon joint which I turned on the table saw using this simple jig.

Finish is my old standby, Sam Maloof oil / wax finish.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, and you're right, the full size keyboard drawer is not available anywhere I could find.

Thanks Jim, yes, it's pretty solid, and yes, I copied Izzy Swan's jig for the tenons :) You gotta get inspiration wherever you can find it!

Beautiful job Jerry, I would never have guessed those legs are veneered plywood. I must agree with ralbuck it would be nearly impossible to buy something like that. It's one of those times when you can say " Its nice to be a woodworker" :)

Thanks very much Paul!

I did consider the idea of solid legs, but hickory can move quite a lot, and the legs have to remain absolutely stable for this to work. I suppose I could have laminated some hickory boards together, but then I'd have a bunch of seams, and I don't think it would have looked as nice.

Yes, it's great to be able to do something like this for ones self.

Looks very nice. I like the hickory. I am working on a mission desk as well. Red oak. I used a mortising machine to make the through mortises but if I ever do that again I will use a router.

Really beautiful, Ben. As it turns out, the desk I replaced with this build was a corner desk! How ironic. I used a hollow chisel mortiser on this as well. Awhile back when I made the island, I cut the mortises by hand. Never again! That was a lot of work.

Yeah, it's not what you'd usually see in Mission furniture, but I'm trying to follow a theme for the whole house, I still have two end tables, two night stands, an office desk, a bed, a book case and a few other things I'm forgetting, to build. My original plan was to build a house full of Mission furniture, and this is the second piece in that plan. Thanks for looking in and for your kind words Ivan.

Thanks Dick, hard, hard, hard, AND stinky. I love the way it looks, but I hate the way it smells when I'm cutting it!

Wow! Jerry, that is quite the setup for your workstation. I haven't seen that method of making tenons; it looks like it took some time to make them all, not to mention all the sawdust. Enjoy your desk, it looks great. Congrats on the DT3.
