Project Information

I really do hate redoak…..........
The pieces just never seem to match after staining. It was minwax Puritan Pine.
But, it was the only choice I had until the local hardwood supplier returns.

I built this as a Christmas present for my Mom. Found out the secret of a stress free Christmas a few years ago. "Don't bother going out trying to find the perfect thing to buy, just build something…............anything. They will love it.

Even if the stained pieces don't match.

You have really achieved something here. It is clear that the style is Mission, but I have never seen another piece quite like it. That is a beautiful result. Oh yeah, I like Red Oak and you made this wood sing with the color and hardware you applied.

Very nice work.

I know what you mean about red oak. There can be a lot of color variations in the wood itself before you even have a chance to finish it.

You are right about building anything for Christmas. They always love it. My problem is I always want to build something for everyone and overbook myself a little bit. Oh well. Its the thought that counts, right?

Great job in the sideboard!!

Your right about the gift thing except my wife wants a new camera. I can't make that. I can build a nice place to store it though. I guess I have my gift for next year.

if you notice in the prefinish pic, the oak didnt match before you stained it

i wonder if using dye (instead of pigment stain) would make it easier to get the colors to match?

What Mike suggests is a good idea, just take it one more step. I have had good luck with dye THEN stain on red oak. Try it on some scrap pieces first. I think you will be happy with it.

Very nice. I prefer QSWO myself but stumbled into stash of PSRO that I have had sitting around for over 20 years and decided to make some A&C bookcases out of. Like Mike states above, I'm thinking using a dye as oposed to stain will allow better color control and will also not pronounce the open grain of the PSRO so much. I'll post when I reach the finishing portion.

Mom will love it for no reason other than you made it, trust me.
