Project Information

Got my camera back and took some pictures of the chair that so many of you helped me out with.

I learned a lot in this exercise. Namely, that I hope to never have to cut tiny triangles with weird angles and bevels ever again! But I'm pretty happy with the way it finally turned out.

It would be neat to see this as an actual chair, but it would need some serious reinforcing. At this size, figuring out a way to clamp it was a big problem, solved by super glue. It allowed me to put a few drops on each bevel and hold it together with my hands for 30 seconds. First time I have ever used it on wood. It makes me nervous though: I am certain it would bust apart if I dropped it.

most miniature furniture couldn't handle being dropped, it's par for the course.

This is lovely :) Such an interesting design, and it looks proportionate even with the grain. great!

Haha! Thanks Jim, I'm re-evaluating my life after this and going in a completely different direction this weekend: Band saw boxes! No angles from hell and nothing precise.

Nice job Steve - would love to watch a series of you building the thing life-size!

On a sidenote, was reading your blog and saw you're in Novato. I grew up in Novato - folks still live there, actually.

Good job! It looks really nice. I love making models. I use super glue when I'm making models, I also use accelerator which helps out a lot with holding time. The accelerator cuts it down to about a 2 second hold.

Steve, if you've got the lumber consider this a standing invitation to come up to Petaluma and we'll see if Domino joints would make one of these strong enough in full-size to use. Looking at the angles on it, I actually think it'd be pretty stable as long as all 3 legs were on the ground. Even rocking back on it looks like most of the force would be reasonable, it's just rocking forward on that front leg that'd muck it up.

Looks good! And now I'm trying to avoid the temptation to try building the full-sized one just to see if it'd hold up…

Dan, that's a great offer! That would be neat. But I definitely need to give my brain a break from triangles for a while. I'll be up in Petaluma 5 days a week in July. Maybe I'll look you up.

After all the headaches this project caused you I do hope you win the contest at the fair. I'm impressed with your tiny chair. This was no small undertaking(no pun intended)

Steve,

Wow, I think your model will be a winner. It's a very impressive piece, the pictures really show

what a great job you did. But your fingers were to close to the saw blade… :)

That is really nice. I'd love to see how you would go about doing this full scale.
