Project Information

This is a pair of mini treasure chests made from sapele with rippled sycamore sides.
Most of my work at the moment consists of fairly small boxes involving some routing out from a solid piece.
These were fun to do and used up some small pieces that were lying in the shop waiting for the right project to come along.

Pretty cool David. Very nice detail.

I might have to try some of those sometime. A good use of small sized "leftovers".

What is the hinge material? It looks like maybe a 1/8 inch dowel?

Hi Martin,
Hinge is a little bigger than 1/8th ( it is 4mm) African Blackwood that I turned for the project.

Elegant. Simple looking . . .but I find the smaller boxes are harder to get consistent results.
I like the two different shades of wood and "Treasure chest" shape is perfect for small box theme.
(I hope you consider "copying" a compliment because I might try . . .)

David,

I would really enjoy reading (and seeing) a blog from you demonstrating your techniques in creating such perfect lilliputian keepsakes.

These are such nice, small, simple, beautiful boxes. I love the scale. Did you make one long piece for the top and bottom and then chop it into several boxes?

Thanks for all the kind comments.
For JohnR and SM - I'll take some photos and write up a blog next time I make some of these.
Blake - I make the tops and bottoms in 2's so that I have longer pieces to rout, then chop in half, just as you thought.
