Project Information

I had to quickly make these mini greenhouses to protect some raspberry plants that have budded from an upcoming frost. Although they're not too pretty, they serve their purpose, and I was able to build them very quickly from mostly scraps. It is simply a bottom board with a hole cut in so it can be easily dropped over any small plant. Thanks for looking!

Now that is one practical build!

What about the wind? Does it knock over the protectors?

I just put these up yesterday, so I haven't been able to see what the wind does to them. However, I made the bottoms out of heavy oak and faced them so the prevailing west winds hit only the smaller sides of them. If it still knocks them over, though, I plan on putting a few 3" nails through the bottoms to act as spikes to stick in the ground. Thanks for all the comments everybody!

Tyler, you need to submit this project to the GardenTenders website (see their link below). This is a great solution to a pressing need. Well done.

Now that is ingenuity at it's best, Tyler. Have you consider leaving it in place and using it as a growing guide when those bushes get taller? You just need to patent it and sell them to the local gardening centers.

I was actually thinking about leaving it there permanently through the summer, but I'm not exactly sure how tall these plants get and how much these shorter pieces of wood would actually support them. As for the patent, I don't know about that haha, but I'm sure I'll perfect the design and sell a few to my surrounding neighbors and anyone else that wants them. And by the way, today's strong winds did knock them down so I'll be putting in the "grounding spikes" this weekend. Thanks for the responses, everyone!

That's what I thought - the screen acts as a sail, and the bottom becomes too narrow to withstand incoming wind.

Yet another possible solution: add two small (frame thickness) sticks on the shorter sides of the bottom plank, so the ends would be sticking out for some 8-10 inches each. This should increase the resistance. But this is just an idea to improve an overall great project.
