Project Information

I wanted to make a couple of small weed pots out of this chunk of mimosa. After I started cutting into it I saw the beautiful grain and decided to keep it larger.

Finish is an experiment with cyanoacrylate. It worked OK but I think I will stick to only using it on pens.

Vase is 6" high, 2.5" diameter.

I really like this weed pot, it has a lot of character in the grain pattern. You've got some really nice projects here.

The grain and color in that vase is outstanding. I could imagine what a table top or side table would look like. I think this is the first time I have seen this wood. Sure would like to pick some up. I just got an old craftsman lathe going and am interested in turning. So for the only thing I have made is 2 honey dippers.

Before I saw the wood for sale I thought it was just a drink too :) I had no idea the color and grain was so beautiful.

I googled for pictures of Mimosa trees and they are pretty scrubby. Some of the trunks can get to a decent size but they are low to the ground and mostly low branches. I believe I have seen quite a few of these trees in the Southeastern US where I live.

Oh beware-it may be a toxic/irritant. After sanding this piece I decided its time to invest in dust collector.

Mimosa! This stuff is really nice. I have know about this tree since I was knee high to a puddle duck but I have alway thought of them as basically big ole weeds. Nasty, at best.

I will still refer to them as this and offer to "take them off your hands" to an unsuspecting home owner. HA!

Man's gotta to do what a man's gotta do to get his turning blanks.

Thanks, for the post.
