good job, I have worked with a lot of odd Florida wood but never with mimosa ! Did the reaction you had come from the smell or the dust " or oils in the wood. What do you think ? Have you ever turned camphor wood ? It should be turned fairly green the first time you try it , to get the full effect of this beautiful wood. It is an experience everyone should try at least once ! I turn,carve,cut and build with it every time I get a chance. I love it and the experience is a pleasant one for me. You can see a few examples of the variation in color and figure that can be found with camphor wood if you look at my projects posted. I think I have several examples in there. Other fine Florida woods are Chinaberry, Sugarberry (sometimes called hackberry) and red heart magnolia just for starters. You probably have access to some florida species in your area that we don't see up here.

Porchfish, the Mimosa was gray to turn. A really hard wood. I don't think its an oily wood. The reaction I had came from the dust. It was similar to the reaction you get from turning Teak. I have done my share of turning Camphor. It has to be my favorite besides Ambrosia Maple. I love turning it green cause you get the great menthol aroma that comes from it. I have a bunch of logs back in the shop right now and just yesterday I cut out a bunch of blanks for angel wing bowls. I will put them up here when I get them finished. I have a few Camphor pieces in my projects. I also have some Chinaberry out there but it is in spindle form. I have turned some spalted Hackberry also.

That is a very striking wood. I have never seen anything made of Mimosa.

I hadn't either..I go to Bradenton with is just north of Sarasota to a guy named Steve (woodturninblanks4u.com, check his page out. He ships nation wide). He sells all kinds of bowl and spindle blanks of all different kinds of wood and had been wanting to get some Mimosa but never did. When this guy came to the meeting with some I had to jump on it. It turned nicely but must wear a resperator cause its not nice to the throat and sinus.
