Project Information

A while ago, Pottz sent me a care package that included a piece of mimosa. I've been fighting it for months, and every time I would turn it, it seemed to want to fly into a million pieces.

Tried hollowing it with a spade bit. Then tried a Forstner bit. Finally got a side-scraper to finish the hollowing.

All along, I kept filling cracks with CA glue, and finally got a shape I was happy with. This is it.

Also, mimosa dust makes me sneeze, a lot. Probably not me favorite, but it came out pretty, so that's something.

About 3 inches across at its widest point.

Finished with homemade friction finish and then a few more coats of straight shellac.

Thanks, Oldrivers!

Agreed, Kenny! But hey, a buddy sent it to me, so I had to give it a try, right?

nice work you really made that wood pop.i agree it's not an easy wood to work with but worth the effort.ive still got a few chucks left to play with.it didn't bother me on the one i turned, sounds like you might be allergic.

Great work and save on the wood.

Will you be drinking Mimosa's at brunch from it?

Yeah, it's pretty, but with the pith running through it, I don't know if it'll crack more… we'll see, I guess.

Thanks, Pottz! I've got the bigger half if the chunk you sent me yet to turn, too. Looked like it was a crotch you sent me, and I cut it into two squarish chunks, rather than trying to do something crazy with he whole thing.

Thanks, Tony!

Thanks, James! I doubt I will. It's just finished with shellac and BLO, so it's likely decorative-only. I guess I could coat the inside with epoxy, but that's like real work.

I know nothing about Mimosa personally. I always thought it was a breakfast drink?

Sure is pretty, but that grain does look like a chunk could just fall off….

First time I worked with it, SteveN, but I agree that it came out pretty. I won't seek it out for future turnings, though.

Thanks, Doug!

Very nice, perseverance pays in the long run.
Wear a dust mask, the sneezing will stop.

Thanks, Tom! I did wear a dust mask, but I'm sure I had dust in my clothes afterwards from trying to sand it.

Good perseverance, Dave .It came out fine. Some pieces take a bit more attention than others.

cheers, Jim

Yeah, Jim. Thanks! I think I started working on this one in July or August, though. Last time I picked it up to work on it, I told myself if I didn't get it this time, it was firewood.

Despite all your troubles getting it done, it's a really good looking piece. The grain pattern and what looks to be sap wood make it stand out super nice

That's good to know, Pottz. I'll worry a little less about it cracking on me, even though I oriented it "funny."

Thanks, Dick! Yeah, there was both heart and sap wood, near as I could tell.

That looks very nice Dave, great looking grain pattern.

I have never worked with it, and it's sounds like I would pass.

one thing ive seen though is the easier the wood is to work with the less it gives in beauty.some of the most beautiful turnings ive seen were from the most difficult wood that needed lots of help,as in ca glue, epoxy and an easy touch.the bowl i turned for the beer swap was a mess,i had to ca glue the crap outta it,but i liked what came out.
