Project Information

Nobody ever accused me of doing anything quickly. This bowl was started 2 years ago and set aside after a nasty catch (see picture #5). Hubby found it and chucked it up on his new Harbor Freight mini lathe and said finish it up (picture #6). It went airborn once. We don't have a long worth or a vacuum chuck, so when the shaping was done, I cut the bowl from the chuck with a back saw and smoothed the bottom flush at the belt sander. Finish is several coats of Rustoleum rattle can lacquer. 5 5/8" diameter by 2" tall by 1 1/4" deep. The wood was collected from gfadvm's firewood pile(with his permission) as we were on our way to Louisiana to meet a bunch of Lumberjocks in 2014. Thanks, Andy! Thank you all for reading this and tips, comments, critiques are welcome. Please share your thoughts, I've much to learn.

Nice shape to the bowl. I like the way the grain forms the two semi circles on the concave side.

That is a beautiful bowl, Candy and you have the grain very well balanced!! It it Mimosa wood? I have never heard of it.

Do you every use a jam chuck to finish off the bottom of bowls?. If not I can send you photo of one and how to use it. That way you can do some detailing in the bottom before cutting it free. I just made a box of them for school because we use them every week and they are getting small in diameter now.

Nice work and don't let the catches throw you. Everyone gets them and just cuts trough them to remove the marks!

Cheers, Jim

Candy!

Beautiful bowl!

A mini lathe from Harbor Freight! ... (I might have to look / think about that!)

The grain is so perfectly displayed! Awesome!

Also, that looks like a very good for an old Singer Sewing machine base!
... looks just like what my grandmother had… :)

Very nice ''double'' edge and shape of this bowl. I envy you on this lathe, it's last on my tools wish list for a long time.
