Nice stool David, will be a great gift. That finish has really brought the red gum up very well.

The craftsmanship looks like its deserving of a big slobbery cows lick, ... as an expression of appreciation

Hold still now,...here it comes!

I like to check woods used in the projects found here to get information about woods I don't know anything about. Looking for something about your "redgum" I found 2 bits of explanation. Both are said to be common to Australia.

Red River Gum

and

Forest Redgum

Which do you think yours is from?

Nice little stool, will it see action as a milk stool? Or just a conversation piece?

Either way it's pretty neat. Thanks for posting.

I would say by the figure it is 'Forest Redgum' mate. It is a common hardwood and from memory used a lot in fence posts along with 'Yellowbox' etc. It is amazing sometimes to grab an old bit of scrap fence post and plane it off to find such beauty underneath.

I don't think it will see action, these things are becoming a bit trendy for the youngsters over here now. It is a solid little beast though and will be around for many years to come so who knows, one day!

Its a bit difficult to ID the actual timber with the protective finish over it.
A construction story and associated pictures wouldn't go astray hint hint.

For sure its of the Gum specis, and I wont bother to list the many varieties, but I can assure you there are very many and all make great timber projects.

Even if it dosn't see any action the cows lick still applies!!

The red gum stool looks as good as the band Red Gum sounded.

You have done well and the splay is certainly visible now, looks to be about only 19 across. (Smirk, snicker)
