Project Information

This small project was a comissioned work from my wife.
She wanted a box to store medicines and she requested it to look like a weathered/antiquated painted box.
As a first try, I practised the technique on my tool chest (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/89871) with the mixed results everyone reported…
Still, I went forward and proceeded with this smaller box.

Woods are pine for the painted parts, alder and spalted beech (rescued from the firewood pile) for the non-painted parts.

The verdict : my wife thought that the paint "did not look old and weathered enough". I guess that it takes more practice (which will not come easily as I am not a great fan of painting wood).

Until next time,

I love it. Boxes are so useful. This one is attractive and unique. Why did you decide to hinge the narrow side? That's a nice change of pace. Are they inset or surface mounted?

Are your corners mitered? Hard to tell. And may I ask the dimensions? I'd like to try a box like this one. I'm guessing it is about 14" x 8" x 5" tall.

Hello Jerry,
I put the hinges (surface mounted) on the small side as I first envisioned a double-hinged lid with a mirror that could fold back. In the end, my wife preferred to have a medicine box so I opted for a sliding tray and a single hinge line.

The corners of the main box were dovetailed, the corners of the tray were fillistered and grooved.

As for the dimension, I did not measure anything and went by with the scraps of wood that were available. The proportions were 1 unit high, 2 units wide and 3 units deep. In this case, one unit being something in the order of 12cm (4"3/4).

Interesting box. I've worked with milk paint in the past with mixed results using western red cedar. Just mainly tissue boxes for around the house.

A very pleasant and traditional variation. I like it a lot. I'll have to go back and rethink milk paint, and give it more consideration for future projects. Thanks for jogging our thinking.

Cool and lovely box! Like the weathered look of the milk paint and the inside is beautiful as well with the spalted beech. Great job!
