Project Information

Other than folding stepstools, this is my first real furniture project. It is built out of South Texas mesquite. The top is out of a 13 inch wide 4/4 slab. It's hard to find a mesquite board that wide without major voids and cracks. I actually have enough left of the slab for a pair of matching end tables. I also found this beautiful peice of mesquite burl with amazing figure that I resawed for the drawer fronts. The legs are attached with sliding dovetails, drawer fronts with one hand cut dovetail on each side. The only metal used was the figure eight tabs I used to attach the top which was raised to give it that "floating" effect I've seen on a couple or other pieces I have seen on this site. I could have probably gotten away with directly attaching the top since mesquite moves hardly at all.

Really a nice looking table, I've never seen misquite this nice, usually I'm smoking food on a barbecue with it. What kind of finish and how did you apply it?

Tom that is Sweeet. The grain in the mesquite is stunning…especially the burl.

Thanks for posting it.

Gorgeous, just gorgeous. Good job, Tom. Mesquite is fast becoming my favorite. I just bought two stumps from a young tree trimer for $100.00. One of the stumps is approximately 4 ft. across. I can't wait to take it and get it milled. Once again, looks great!

Really nice work - I always liked how visually 'light' projects seem with the floating top designs.
Gorgeous wood as well.
Nice materials - nice design and good craftsmanship….can't go wrong!

Your compliment on my table prompted me to check out yours. Awesome. I have often drooled over the mesquite boards I've seen around, wondering what it'd look like under a fine finish. Now I know. Wow!

I really like the top on this table. Kind of rustic, but beautiful.
