Project Information
This Box was a custom order, the customer after viewing my pre-made boxes came across one that I had made previously using Cypress and Wenge and wanted one like it only he wanted a larger box, this is actually the biggest valet box that I've made yet thus it turned out more like a chest then a box, it has all the same features and parts that my designs carry, it offers three large drawers, one hidden drawer three lift out trays one on top and one small coin tray located in one of the drawers, the small coin tray also acts as a key by way of magnets to lifting the false bottom door hidden under the large tray on top also revealing the third and very large hidden tray and upon removing that tray also reveals yet another large hidden compartment. He specified that he needed the hidden compartments as he had small kids and wanted to keep things hidden.
the woods used for this project,
Since the inner core and cavities were cut with a bandsaw, I used Poplar (for my first time) instead of Alder for the glue up block due to the size customer needed, I found that both the Alder and the Poplar cut about the same as for as density goes only the poplar is more expensive per board feet. The outer skin of the box joined via miter and spline is Cypress and the top trim is Wenge along with the top lift out tray and drawer pulls.
This box measures 13 1/2" Long 8 1/2" Wide and 9 1/2" High, I first put a single coat of tung oil on all parts then used a non wax shellac on the end grain of the drawers as a sealer for the top coat, I used two applications of satin wipe on poly my mix and for the final a rub down with paste was. The Tung Oil didn't really effect the poplar as for as changing color goes but it does change the appearance on alder.
Thanks for Looking and comments are always enjoyed and replied too.
