Project Information

This Box was a custom order, the customer after viewing my pre-made boxes came across one that I had made previously using Cypress and Wenge and wanted one like it only he wanted a larger box, this is actually the biggest valet box that I've made yet thus it turned out more like a chest then a box, it has all the same features and parts that my designs carry, it offers three large drawers, one hidden drawer three lift out trays one on top and one small coin tray located in one of the drawers, the small coin tray also acts as a key by way of magnets to lifting the false bottom door hidden under the large tray on top also revealing the third and very large hidden tray and upon removing that tray also reveals yet another large hidden compartment. He specified that he needed the hidden compartments as he had small kids and wanted to keep things hidden.

the woods used for this project,
Since the inner core and cavities were cut with a bandsaw, I used Poplar (for my first time) instead of Alder for the glue up block due to the size customer needed, I found that both the Alder and the Poplar cut about the same as for as density goes only the poplar is more expensive per board feet. The outer skin of the box joined via miter and spline is Cypress and the top trim is Wenge along with the top lift out tray and drawer pulls.

This box measures 13 1/2" Long 8 1/2" Wide and 9 1/2" High, I first put a single coat of tung oil on all parts then used a non wax shellac on the end grain of the drawers as a sealer for the top coat, I used two applications of satin wipe on poly my mix and for the final a rub down with paste was. The Tung Oil didn't really effect the poplar as for as changing color goes but it does change the appearance on alder.

Thanks for Looking and comments are always enjoyed and replied too.

More Pics for viewing below due to all the parts entailed in this project.

Randy,
I associate this general design as your "signature" product. And I like it a lot. This one is a logical extension and completed with your usual skill and expertise. Nicely done.

Thanks Monte, Charlie and Roger

One thing I keep forgetting to do and have been meaning too, on the very top tray instead of gluing in the finger grabs, instead incorporate them as part of the side walls, I think would look much better.

Blackie, this is a great job as always. Glad to see there is a little band saw work in there. The color contrast makes for a great look. The dark band around the top and the splines and handles really pull the whole box together in terms of appearance. Great touches there. Of course I am a fan of rounded corners, so I love that corner shot. The photos and write up are nicely done. That has shown steady improvement …just like your boxes and ideas. This valet should give years of useful service and become a family heirloom. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Thanks Thomas, Jay, Grizz, wncguy and Big Al

Big Al, I don't know how well the drawer edges where they meet the miters at would take if I rounded the corners to much but round them as much as I can.

Another great looking valet box Randy. I think you have nailed the design of these…next you will be adding feet to them. Thanks for sharing. I have a couple in the process, but nothing as nice as what you are building.

Very nice! Those have more compartments/secret passages than I can visualize at one time.
