Project Information

Last summer a friend of mine from Spring City, TN brought me 2 pickup loads of Sycamore. It came from a big tree and he had cut it up into large blocks about 14" x 14" x 32". I spent a good part of the summer quarter sawing it on my Rikon 18" band saw.
These sconces are some of the items that I am making now out of some of the Sycamore. I have made several more of these sconces out of other woods and you can view them at my store JaffaRoad at etsy.com.

Those are beautiful! I'd love to see those made. I have a Rikon (probably the same one you have)...do you have a jig for sawing? What's your method?

MT,
I took a track saw guide that I had from (PSI) PennStateInd and made a sled out of it.
It worked well enough to get through the project but it was slow and tedious to adjust for the thickness of each cut. I still have several blocks left to re-saw and I am thinking about buying the Little Ripper saw mill package.

Those look great. The sides of the pews at a church in my town have a very similar pattern. I usually spend the whole mass dissecting the build process on them rather than paying attention. I'd love to try something like this one day.

Kind of reminds me of gothic architecture. If you've ever been to the top of "the Crown" in Chicago, it kind of reminds me of that as well. Very cool!

Love the medieval period.
The wood is perfect for your application.
Do you carve them by hand or CNC Machine.
Would like to see your process.
I'll check out your store on Etsy.

Thanks to you all,

All the carving is done with hand tools. Chisels and gouges. The blank is sawed out with the band saw (Rikon 18")and the inside cuts are made with a scroll saw (Seyco 21"). I don't use Dremel/Fordom type tools either.
I've designed some special scrapers that I use in the finial shaping of the cusps which are not flat but slightly curved and then sanded.
I enjoy the carving process above all the other woodworking activities.
I will try and post some pictures when I make some more of these.
Please visit my store JaffaRoad > etsy.com there are many more photos there.

Beautiful! And by hand, yet! I hope to see the day when I carve that I make cuts that neatly.
