Project Information

I made this bread box for my wife's birthday, who had mentioned she wanted one. Its only my second marquetry project and I made a few mistakes, but I think it came out well. Its about 11" high, 10" deep, 17" long. I bought some curly maple veneer from woodcraft, but wasn't too pleased with it. It was very bubbly/warped and so it was hard to glue to the plywood without bubbles. (I used .25-inch baltic birch). But because I've heard that you need to veneer both sides of the plywood I ran out of veneer pretty quickly, so I had to resaw a piece of walnut glue it together and use it as the back panel. I figured because it was going against a wall it didn't really mater what it was. The design, was pretty much done by free hand. I had a variety pack of veneer, so I'm not 100% sure what everyone is, but I'm sure the inside of the bread is birds eye maple. I'm not sure what the crust is…

Hop you like it…

THE MARQUETRY IS AWESOME and you shouldn't apologize for using Walnut although it's a shame that it will be facing the wall for the rest of its life : )

Well done, and you get to see your nice work everyday, not to mention that a happy wife makes life worth living. I looked real close, but I couldn't find any of the mistakes you mentioned.

I need to make a bread box, so I searched and found yours. I like the door style best of the lot. I'll bet that cherry background is really pretty by now. The crust looks like red oak.
