Project Information

This was a gift for my oldest brother. He request the box for a very close friend of his. The dimensions are 13" x 13" x 7" large enough to get full sized sheet of paper and other larger items inside. I wish I had additional photo to help show the box, but it seems projects are always coming down to a deadline and I don't get all the photos I should. The woods I used are Ipe (black), bloodwood (red), Satinwood (yellow) and Maple. The finish was a sprayed lacquer.

That is just excellent marquetry. (I assume it is marquetry)
What is your cutting method?

An amazingly beautiful box - excellent craftsmanship. Please give us more detail about the inlay(?) on the top of the box.

Thank you all for the complements.

Shipwright, yes this is marquetry but not traditional. I use Corel Draw to make all the designs and then cut the veneer with a small laser cutter.

Thank you everyone for your comments!

Northwest29 I am not sure what information you would like, but I will try to give you some additional info. Technically speaking this is marquetry not inlay. The center design starts with 40 larger sized veneer pieces that I then cut into approximately 350 individual pieces. Most of these are in the eagle with 199 total. All of the colors of these veneer are natural and not dyed. Let me know if there is something I am leaving out you would like to know.

Wow that is just amazing. Incredibly accurate work. How do you avoid burning the edges of the cut with the laser? What type of laser are you using? I'd love to learn more on how you do this!

NeerlyO - Wow, that is amazing that you can keep track of where all those pieces go when putting it together. I can see where the laser makes the work practical. Thanks for the added info. Again, excellent work.
