Project Information

I completed this project this afternoon after working on it for about 3 weeks - in between my day job responsibilities! I really liked the design in Popular Woodworking but made several changes. First of all I used dados on all the shelves except the top (rabbet) and I used narrow hard maple glued together and a single piece of zebrawood for the flat endboard. I finished it with danish oil which brought out the beauty of the wood.
I'd like to thank all the LJs who gave me advice on how to cut maple without burn and to AaronK for his hints on assembly. I really love how this looks in my office.

You really did a great job on this project , Ellen : )
That's got to be the nicest piece of Zwood that I've ever seen ! Did you have the piece "in stock" , or did you go shopping for it just for this project ?

Thanks Dusty56 et al! I found myself a wonderful wood supplier in the next town. I bring him muffins and he gives me he left overs. Unfortunately, the zebrawood was not a leftover, so I had to buy it. Pretty expensive piece but well worth it and a lot less $$ than having someone else make it. I forgot to mention that there are no nails or screws in this one…just glue and friction (with help from glue!).

Ellen , I would say that you got your moneys worth out of that Zebrawood as it really adds so much to the piece : ) Did you ask him just how many muffins it would take to be a fair trade ? hahaha

Hey Ellen,

Love the bookcase. Great flowing grain. I also like the book ends.
What kind of joinery did you use for the zwood?

Great work, Ellen. The bookshelf is very unique and the wood choice is fantastic. I read your post/question about burning wood and am planning to implement some of your same strategies to cut down burning after seeing this inspiring piece.

ellen35,
I just ran across your bookcase, using the roll the dice feature on the site! I wanted to congratulate you on a very fine build. I really like the way you featured the Zebra wood. The design is most attractive and caught my attention as well. Keep on baking those muffins and let us see some more fine work!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
