Project Information

I've had this small chunk of maple laying around under the lathe for a couple months and last night I decided to chuch it up and see what "turned" out while listening to Monday night football on the shop radio. Turned out to have some pretty grain under the rought lumber. Finished with tung oil and Beale polishing system.

Sorry Doug no hollowing tool, a 3/4 inch fluted drill bit in a chuch on the tailstock makes a nice hole for dried weeds.

Beautiful grain. Is that big leaf maple? I'm going to have to try using the tung oil on the lathe. I've used it as a finish on furniture before and liked the result. Do you have any finishing tips for a beginner like me? I've only used Crystal Coat friction polish or mineral oil on my turnings. I don't care for the mineral oil as it didn't retain the shine and made the wood look washed out.
