Just finished a huge 4-month long trestle table build. All 8/4 hard maple, it's 9'x3' with seating for 10. Finished with dyed shellac and arm-r-seal. The client asked for "bombproof," well they definitely got it with this!
She's a beast of a table for sure, with the top/legs weighing in at about 300 lbs. the benches weigh about 80 lbs apiece. When your designing a project for a family of 10, you definitely need to overbuild to make sure things last for many years.
The structure is a 3.5" square H-style leg with half-lapped 8/4 support struts. The benches are constructed in exactly the same manner, all with 8/4 tops. The table can be disassembled easily and moved for storage if needed.
