Thanks James! The pins are actually red oak. I could only find poplar and oak locally in the size I needed. The oak had a darker brown look to it. I tried it in a test piece and liked the contrast. I think the oil in the Seal-a-Cell also further darkened it.

Great looking table. The maple gives it a really clean look. All of the details catch your eye as well.

Thanks! Once the finish has hardened up enough, it's going to be moving into a room where my younger kids have their toys, so I wanted to make sure it was sturdy enough. It's sized to go in front of a loveseat we had there, which we do a lot of reading at. It will give us a place to put books while reading. That room also has maple cabinets, so it should go well there.

This is a nice trestle table and beautifully done.

First off let me say I like massive for benches, and tables. I'm a big heavy guy and Asian isn't going to cut it around the house.

Observations are this is an incredible first project, appears to be very well done both build and finish. Of course it has that massive thing going on. I see the kids comment, and if they trash that table, check with the zoo to see if you can lease the kids out to them. Maybe they could strength test cages, stuff like that…..

You will be happy with all of your choices. Hard Maple is great to work with, and in use it's hard to beat. The Seal-a-Cell and Arm-R-Seal works very well, hand applied. or sprayed, and makes for a great finish as long as you sand well on application. If you don't you will see it on application between coats, but repairable in that you can sand it down to smooth again, and reapply.

Thanks! I like your's a lot as well. Mine is also a knock down design. The stretcher can be removed from the uprights by just knocking out the wedges. My top is secured to the base by some lag screws with washers that go through some countersunk holes in the arms of the upgrights. I made the holes over sized to allow for wood movement of the top.
