Project Information
This is my first post to this site and thought I would share these coasters I made.
The mosaic is made from Curly Maple and Padauk. The sides and base are Cherry. First time working with Cherry, what a fun wood with which to work. The finish is a couple coats of 100% Tung oil followed by multiple coats of Formby's Tung Oil Finish. Hopefully enough to protect the coasters during actual use.
I start by making a 3/4" thick mosaic block from the individual triangles, cut on my Christmas present: a bandsaw (thank you sweet wife). The block is then cut into ~1mm thick slices (again, wonderful tool, this bandsaw) and these are glued to cherry bases. Then a little router work to form the sides.
The inspiration for these came playing with a bunch of Maple and Padauk triangular scraps from a previous project. Or, why a box of cutting scraps is a good thing.
If you like, I have a photo blog detailing the build.
