Project Information

In my evolving study of burls for pens, I just completed a Classic rollerball. I'm having a great time driling and turning Burl. Polishing these pens was a tremendous experience as the grain and figuring explode as the finish penetrates the wood.

My pen cap is slightly proud of the ring, and that's been my challenge with these pens. I am supposed to take 1/8" off the bottom and set a 90 degree face on the leading edge. It's been tough to have that leading edge come down to meet the proper diameter for the pen cap. I'm usually just over or just under the proper diameter.

Those are some really nice pens. What do you use for a finish?

Kerux, on this pen, I used HUT low lustre (brown bar) for two coats, then finished with three coats of Shellawax liquid. I've been experimenting with combinations of wax and liquid finishes before I buy too many more chemicals.

Typically, I use Micromesh to at least 3600 before applying any finishes, but lately I've been going to 12000 even with woods. The higher grit micro mesh really established a great base for any finish.
