Project Information

I had a big block of Maple that had a wonderful burl on the outside of the trunk. It had all this gnarly, pointy wood on the outside. I wanted to get into the burl to see the wonders I knew were there so I cut a curl off the outside of itl. WOW! I was thrilled at what I found, burl wood that went in about 6" below the surface. I'm still cogitating on what to do with the inside of the burl but when I looked at the piece I had shaved off to get a peek I couldn't believe what it looked like.

I could not bear the thought of getting rid of this piece so I left it in the shop and stared at it every so often. It finally hit me that I should put a clock in it and take advantage of the curve by making it a business card holder.

I was really nervous about applying too much pressure to the piece while I was sanding the interior surface. The Maple was tough however and held up well. It wouldn't quite stand up on its own so I had to add two little dowel legs for support. The dimensions are kind of hard to determine given the shape but it is about 6" tall, 5" wide, 5" deep.

A wedge of Bloodwood was shaped and attached to act as a support for the business cards. A coat of natural stain to highlight the burl and then three coats of thinned polyurethane to make the surface shine. This piece may not be for everyone, but I just had to do something with this piece besides heat my home with it.

Oh man!!!!!!!! how awesome, great job, what a beauty. Might I suggest checking out Cards of Wood a company in Belmont, Michigan and you can have cards made from real wood to use on it. That would look very cool.

Nice use of the burl …you've got room to add a couple more pics with your business card in place on your project : )

I have never used a burl but if that is what you can do with it I must look harder for a burl.

Beautifulll Piece of art. Great burl. Love the design.

Some times you spend a lot of thought trying to figure "what this could be?" and all of a sudden it hits you.

Great inspiration for thinking OUTSIDE the box!

Keep it up.

Banish the thought of firewood. That is gorgeous. I love maple burl, maple syrup, maple candy, anything maple, I even have maple cabinets in the kitchen.
