Project Information

The first bowl is a Natural Edge Maple bowl as a demo for the high school. It is finished with gloss poly. I took in 6 blanks, but 4 of them cracked pretty bad and one of the students made a bowl with a crack, but we repaired it. She took it home before I got a picture of it.

The second bowl is a natural edge bowl I did for LJ Gary S. to show him how to make one. It was thought to be a cherry blank, but it does not smell at all like cherry. Gary will finish it at home .

Cheers, Jim

Nice! I really like the stark contrast in colors between the lighter maple and dark bark.

Beautiful work Jim. That's the quality of "demo" that should inspire the students. The teacher that I had could only dream of turning a piece as lovely as yours.

Awesome bowls Jim. There is something special about a natural edge bowl.
Maybe you should go back to work as a turning teacher.

Great looking bowls, Jim. I'm curious, with natural edge bowls like this do you turn the inside or the outside first?

Thank you all for the nice comments!!

Hi Joe, that is Gary in the photo holding the bowl I turned for him. He is the past president of our guild!!

Hi Dave. I have too many"irons in the fire" to ever go back to work. This is fun!! I start them out with two groups of ideas that Lyle Jamieson imparted to me:
1) The ABC's of turning - Anchor, Bevel , Cut
2) The four cuts with a bowl gouge- Pull cut Push cut, Scrape cut and Sheer Scrape cut. I want them to get comfortable with them and I can leave them alone for a while!!

Hi Mike. I always turn the outside first and then cut the inside to match the outside.

cheers, Jim

I remember the ABC's well Jim. Only for me in the beginning it was ABC-C . Anchor, bevel, cut, and catch. Ha ha. Glad that stage of learning is over with.

Thanks, Charles and Lee!
Hi Dave, that last C is what we try to avoid!! Most of the kids don't get any at all on their second bowl.

cheers, Jim
