Project Information

Hello everyone! Have been lurking around for a while, but never posted anything here until now… So, here it is, my first project published here. :)

This is a well-known project from WoodSmith/PlansNOW. I made some minor changes, like reducing the size and adding flutes on the sides. Original plan called for curly maple, but mine version is made of red oak, and poplar for the drawer. This clock was made a couple of years ago as a gift (which was well received). :)

I drew the clock face from scratch in InkScape, printed it on paper and fixed on a 1/4" MDF by double-sided tape. Just in case someone needs this drawing for their own projects, it's available for download here with both Roman and Arabic numbers (at the bottom of the page). The mechanism, hands and a drawer pull are from Lee Valley. The finish is three coats of Tung oil.

Nice job. I know this is a woodworking site, but the most creative feature of this project isn't the wooden case, but the personally designed and fabricated face. What a clever idea! It inspires me to use a similar technique in one of my upcoming projects.

Thanks, everyone! The person I made this gift for is "fixated" on clocks of all different kinds-there are dozens of them in her home. I just thought adding some personal touch to the collection would be nice.

DYNO360, I was looking for a clockface I could use, but after not finding anything that would look "just right", I thought making it from scratch would be the easiest thing. It took me probably just 10-15 minutes in InkScape to draw it, and, like you said, you can customize it any way you want. The only thing is that this style will not work for some more intricate project-if you are doing an antique-looking grandfather clock, or a nice wall timepiece, you will need something that looks better than a face printed on a regular paper… :)
