Project Information

Hi fellow Jocks,

Here is the makeup vanity I build for my wife. The primary woods are cherry (case and drawer fronts), walnut (legs, drawer pulls) and white oak (drawers).
I wanted to challenge myself with waterfall sides miter joins and curved front/drawers - this time no CNC, just a sharp bandsaw blade and router bit/template.

I initially wanted to to try hand cut dovetails on the drawer sides but I chickened out and went with rabbet + exposed dowels, I had no test piece and no backup material for the drawer fronts.

I wanted the legs to be removable so I came up with a stainless bracket system screwed to the case.

The mirror is also removable with 2 stainless steel brackets embedded in the frame. Just for kicks, I embedded LEDs in the frame and diffused it with a layer of acrylic, the mirror was cut locally and sandwiched between the LEDs and a plywood backing.

The finish is my trusted process of 2-3 coats of de-waxed shellac followed by 4 coats of water based poly with intermediate sanding to 1000 grit.

This will be a 2 part set with a drawer chest that will sit on the right - stay tuned !

Really like the exposed dowels. What a great way to accent the drawers subtly.

Great work. The curved legs go very nice with this design. I agree with you on the finish, such a foolproof no odor option.

Lovely. The curves on the legs and mirror really add a level of appeal. Plus all the other details. Great job!
