Project Information

I made this picture frame for my grandfather who is in the hospital. it is made out of solid mahogany with a pine spline. i finished it with 3 coats of gel polyurethane. i used a piece of Plexiglas instead of glass so there is no chance that it will break if it falls. since the Plexiglas is 1/8" thick i just put a dado in the mahogany with a regular table saw blade on the table saw and made a jig to support the piece while i ran it through on the mitered corner for the 1/8 spline. then i just put the picture and a piece of 1/4" luan in the back and used a couple of wire brads to hold it in. i tried to do a fold up stand for the back but i didn't have a long enough rivet. while thats the story of my picture frame. overall i think it was a fun project. i was really pressed for time though as i started it yesterday at around 130 pm and gave it too my grandfather at around 1100 am today. i even had to put on a coat of poly at 1100 pm last night.

great job. Looks great. Like the spline. Did you make a spline jigs for thus or did you already have one. Also did you get a tablesaw or what. Overall a really good job. Great for the time constraints. Do you have a picture if the back I just wanted to see the brad wire hold Downs I had a lot of trouble figureing out how to attach the back.

That is a nice frame. And I like the use of the splines as well. I am sure that your grandfather appreciated the gift.

Really nice looking frame. I like the splines. I really enjoy seeing your work and Tyler's work. You guys are very impressive. You both seem wise beyond your years. Keep up the good work - you are the future of the craft.

Great frame. I think that splines are the best way to treat corners.
