Project Information

We recently installed a new front door that has all frosted glass. My wife wanted some way to look out without someone seeing who was there without having to walk all the way upstairs. I came across this free open source software that is made to display information from behind a two way mirror, called MagicMirror ( https://magicmirror.builders/ ). I went without a mirror and just use it as a personal digital signage/organizer board.

I found there were a few modules for displaying a video feed from a camera, so I added one into the list of modules. I've also got our personal calendars, to-do list, weather, my morning traffic info, NFL scores, and holiday/birthday lists showing that we can see as we're heading out the door or passing by.

It's also integrated with some of the motions sensors in the room, so the screen will turn on automatically or off after one minute of no motion.

I designed the cabinet to match an existing table we have in our entry. The drawer panel is false and conceals the raspberry pi, wall outlet, gesture sensor, and a wireless keyboard.

I used a usb power outlet to save space and the raspberry pi is wireless, so there are no wires showing. vent holes were drilled in top and bottom, the heat rising from the monitor draws in cool air from the bottom.

not sure i fully understand how it works but it's pretty damn cool.the link doesn't seem to work though.

Ah, sorry, link has been fixed.

Typically one would mount the LCD monitor behind a two way mirror and you'd be able to view information on it while getting ready in the morning and such. I just didn't use a mirror and use it as a smart display. The calendar, weather, and all the other information stays up to date without any interaction from me.

Love it! I did a simpler version of something like this a few years ago. I went with weather, google calendar, headlines, to-do list and the NY Rangers schedule.

If anyone wants to see what it looks like being used as a Mirror this is the link.

An acer 24" I got on a black friday deal. I had planned to make another mini virtual pinball with it, but just hadn't gotten around to that project. I kind of want to do a full sized table anyway.

Great job! Have been looking into this for a while now. Definitely need one in our busy household! You are running all your module on a single Raspberry Pi, correct? Which model PI are you using? Thanks for a great project and all the good info!

I'm running a PI3 B+ and its been stable, but did have to put a large case/heatsink on it ( https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D3S1WBP ). The case is pretty much is a heatsink. Obviously the more modules you add the more time it takes to get things displayed the first time, but after that, things swap out pretty quickly (I'm running the MMM-Pages to rotate modules on/off the page).

I also had to add a 3 amp (3.8 actually) power supply as the Rpi wall wart just wasn't putting out enough power, I kept seeing the yellow lightning bolt on the screen when it was refreshing pages. On the new power supply I have yet to see that yellow lightning bolt.

You can also run MagicMirror on a server in server mode, then use any web browser to display it. There are some modules, such as MMM-RTSPStream for video feed, that do require software on the pi to display.
