Showcase cover image for Magic Coin Bank

Project Information

I saw a plan for this Magic Coin Bank in a Popular Woodworking magazine. I changed the dimensions to make it larger so I could add a talking module like the ones you get in greeting cards. The coin touches the contacts to trigger the voice when you insert a coin and push the drawer in.

This project started out to be an experiment. If it work out ok I was going to make two of these for our two little 6 years old Grandchildren Courtney and Chloe. After burning up my brain for a few days this is what I came up with. So I got one done and one more to make.

Video about the build

The wood is Mahogany and the dimensions are 7" W x 4 3/8" D x 5" H I use a button to make the knob, Supper glued a screw to the back, It's a perfect size for the tiny draw!

Link to hear it talk. It's my voice but I'm sure the Grandkids will want to change what it says. LOL!

See Talking modules here on ebay.

Truly a master mind at work, now I can see what you have been doing with your time, very creative, bet the kids love it, heck, I would even like one. Just have to love those box joints. I am assuming that one of the measurements is 4&3/8" deep.

That's cute and cool all at the same time with the electronics added .
I am sure the little girls will enjoy it a lot and show it of to their friends but I am sure they would like a little music with it ,I know because my Granddaughters scream when I sing for them and it is not for joy because they cover their ears .

Tony, what a neat idea for a coin box. I don't think your granddaughters will want to change a thing, not even grandpa's voice. It's magic after all :).

Well it took a lot of thinking to get the trigger mechanism doped out but after a few adjustment and tweaking I got it to work nicely.

Don, I made those box joints with the Horizontal Mortise Machine I made a while ago. I can't believe how accurate that thing is. Making box joints is a breeze now! I do all 4 sides all at once.

Rick, Peat and mariva57, Thank for all the great comments!

Klaus, Sing! Who me.. Not a chance! LOL! I sure they will be looking for that little recording button so they can put some music on it.

Lee, I'm sure after a while they will get sick of hearing me say that same thing over and over again. We'll have to see how ling it takes them to make say something else. LOL!

Thanks again Guys and Gals!

This truly was a fun build. I can't wait to see their faces when My wife and I give these Magic Banks to them for their birthday's in July. Now the wait begins!
