Project Information

I had made a mallet back awhile ago when everyone was doing the "split handle" thing. It looks pretty cool, but truth be told, it is NOT very comfortable to use. For one thing the handle is too long and I just didn't shape it to fit my hand very well.

So the other day I was digging thru my woodpile, looking for something to throw up on the lathe. Spotted a block of oak I found at the dumpsters last year. Someone had glued 4 pieces of 1" X 4" together and started to turn a table leg but they gave up. It was pretty ugly, but I figured for a mallet it might work fine. The finished mallet is just over 13.5" overall, with the handle being about 10"

I have no idea what the handle is made of. I "THOUGHT" it was a piece of black gum someone had given me, but after turning it, the wood is almost pure white. The bark had some funky stuff growing on it. Here's several shots of it.

I drilled a 1.25" hole in the head and turned the handle to fit the hole. Glued together using Titebond III .
I put a good heavy soaking of BLO on it and then glued a piece of 1/4" thick rubber on one side so I can beat on things without marring the finish.

Big improvement. First one was too bulky.

Looks good Joe,
Is the handle maple, I have seen that type of fungus growing on maple before?
?
It does not really matter if you like it, does it feel better in your hand
??

Again it look very nice.
Have a blessed evening and have some fun making dust, Todd

Much better on the 2nd mallet!
Get ready to turn a bunch of mallets…they are too much fun.

And please share more mallets on the Mallets of your Dreams Thread :)
