Project Information

This is an entertainment center I built for a friend. He wanted a simple, low entertainment center to fit in an alcove in his house. It had to be able to support an LCD TV, have DVD/video game storage, and shelves for various electronics.

The top is red oak plywood sided with solid oak, sides are plywood as well. The drawer fronts and facia are solid, but the drawer sides and bottom are maple plywood I had left over from another project. Drawer slides are hard maple, and I haven't heard anything about them binding up (I gave it to him November 2011) so I guess I did that right. Time will tell if they hold up. The handles are solid oak, and I got the idea from Mathias Wandel over at Woodgears.ca.

The facia is all pocket screwed since 1.) I had never done a mortise and tenon before and 2.) it was quick and easy. The siding for the top was bisketed. Drawer fronts were face-glued to the drawer box, no fancy joinery there.

There are quite a few things I would have done differently that I'll chalk up to rookie mistakes (squareness issues, cutting stock too short and not having extra, being too fancy making slotted connections to the top when pocket screws would have been fine, etc.).

I think it looks fantastic, well done! My first M&T project was also a good learning experience, worth it though!

This project looks great! I like the simple design and very clear lines. The oak looks very good, especially the drawer fronts with the little bit wild grain.
Very neat job, Thank you for sharing!
