Showcase cover image for low coffee table

Project Information

I spent a few weeks making this coffee table. It was a design that I came up with, and I completed it through a series of classes with a local furniture maker, Michael Holton. Basically, he helped me through figuring out a cut list, milling, glueing up, joinery, etc. I have done projects before, but as I'm working out of a 1-car garage, it was nice to get to use the "big tools" in a "big shop". Doing something this big and heavy would have been quite difficult with a little portable contractor saw and a bench top 6" jointer. Possible, but difficult (for me).

It's all solid walnut. The legs are just a mortise and tenon square that is bolted to the table using threaded inserts. The finish is a coat of shellac, followed by several coats of wipe on arm-r-seal.

The little slot/insert is for remotes and a magazine. Our previous coffee table had 2 big drawers in it which just became a place for us to hide junk. Solution to having too much junk - don't make a place to store it!

Overall, it's a simple design but i'm pretty happy with how it came out. If anyone wants a sketchup file of this, just email me and i'll send it your way.

If anyone is in the Calgary area and wants to take some classes with a furniture maker who has been featured in Fine Woodworking (check out the most recent issue reader's gallery), check Michael out. He's a super nice and energetic guy who will help you when you need it, and let you work at your own pace and leisure when you don't.

Really nice, a few more pics of both higher angles and leg details would be nice. Sure nice design and looks well crafted. I really like it.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I added 3 more pictures. I've discovered the definition of "difficult" - taking pictures low to the floor while your dog is around. "Hey! He's at my level! Let's lick his face and get him to pet me!"
