Project Information

This is Version 2.0 that was created after the experimental one worked so well in J.f.F #84...
Construction was the same as the smaller one; indeed, the same "parts" were used… The only differences are a heavier Platform (3/4" Plywood), additional holes were added (more reach for the jaws/clamps), and a quick set of Step Blocks were cut…

Pretty self-explanatory… It's not a pretty thing, but it's working very well and the price was right…
A Grand Total of $3.58 went into this Project, for the two Carriage Bolts and accompanying nuts and washers…

Questions and/or Comments always Welcome (and Appreciated!) :)

Mike,
Super Job with the improvements!

What is the resaw capacity of your bandsaw?

Thanks my Friends!
Lew: This Band Saw has a height capacity of 8" and was at its limit on this log… I don't mind telling you that I was sweating it (a little) on the first cut! Before making it, I took a minute to add a couple of chocks to make sure the thing didn't "roll out" on me…

But all went well… That's the same bit of White Birch being cut, that we found washed up on the shore last Fall!

Pretty nice setup. I have bandsaw envy. Mine is too small. Milling lumber is so appealing to me here in Missouri where you routinely find cherry and walnut sold as firewood! Makes me so sad.

Something like the smaller one that I made first would work for you Scott, at least for smaller branches… I was using that one to cut 3"-4" Pear branches and it worked like a charm!

i love seeing you taking logs found and using them, i hate to see waste in wood and its jigs like this that turn a possibly ugly log into beautiful wood, thumbs up on your resaw jig….

That is really nice, Mike. I think I'd like to do something like that too, You have a wide range of adjustment. I have to build another one and you just gave me a good idea!!

Thanks for posting…............Cheers, Jim

Thanks Grizz!
Have at it Jim! I was limited by the length of the 3/4" Ply scrap that I used, but there's no limit to the length you could make one… If I had the material, I'd make one with a full Sheet of Ply (8' long), and then use rollers fore and aft of the Bandsaw to carry the load… That would be a long, tedious cut!

Just out of curiousity what sort of feed rate are you getting? I was resawing some 8" birch on my jet bandsaw with a brand new blade and felt like it was awfully slow… a few inches a minute.

Looks like a darn good all around sled. If I hadn't just built mine recently I might be using some of your ideas.

Thanks Lenny, but I was just fulfilling a need, quickly and easily…
LP: I didn't time how long it took but the whole cut, end to end, could not have been much more than a couple minutes… Wood has different densities (even in the same piece) so some areas cut slow while others cut much faster…
A few inches a minute seems very slow with a decent Bandsaw in good operating condition…?! What are you using for a Blade? Right now, I'm running a Timberwolf 1/2", 3 TPI…

I really like both of the designs of yours. I just got a bandsaw that is capable of this and I can't wait to saw some of my own lumber. Thanks for the ideas.

Thank You Mike! That's very kind of you to say… This has been done as long as there has been need for Lumber, and thousands of different ways… But I like to look at a process with fresh eyes and a clean slate, and try to come up with something that fills my needs, capabilities, and circumstances… Kind of like you my Friend… :)

Mike, I knew an updated model would be in the works! You definitely have the bug now. I built 3 log sleds and then the sawmill found me! I really wish you were close enough to come paly on the mill.

Great jig Mike. I was wondering what type and size of saw you were using, and how large is the motor. Seems like a pretty good size of log you were cutting. I have a 14" delta with a raiser kit added and can nearly 12 highs, but cutting a log like that I'm not sure the motor would handle it.
