Project Information

Made this on a bit of sudden inspiration for what to do with a live edge cut off I got for free somewhere. Didn't know what wood it was, turned out to be aromatic cedar. Tiger Maple was actually from HD. I tried to keep as much of the live edge as possible, but the top shown is significantly wider than the bottom, so most of the parts I cut off, there was actually maybe only 1/4 inch of wood and I don't think that the joints would have held up, especially after trying to square things up.

Finish is tung oil then wipe on poly.

I love the Cedar.

I just cut some from an old downed tree out in the backyard and love the color..

The contrasting woods is also very cool.

Very awesome design!

That is very nice. Sweet design.
Is that an inlay in your second picture?

It's actually a wedge day through tenon and you can see the purpleheart wedges both above and below so it's kinda cool, since the live edge gets narrower across the tenon (it seems almost covered on one end and end only 1/4 inch on the narrow side).

The purpleheart spline that I used to repair the broken off piece of the live edge on the other side almost does look like an inlay though from the bottom.

I originally considered just making a shelf from the cedar but felt that wouldn't be as interesting. Glad I did this everyone in the family likes it.

Think I'm going to use this idea. Will help keep cups off the floor.
Thanks for sharing.
