Project Information

This is the project I've gotten the most compliments on for it's ingenuity and requests to build replicas for others. My first commission piece. :) (although relatives don't pay very well) It's not pretty or particularly difficult. The finish is…well there is no finish. I like it because it solved a problem. Where to put the litter box?

So I cut a hole in the wall between one of the bathrooms and the garage, built a box, added rope light, and made a door. Bingo, problem solved. Litter box and associated smell and litter dust is hidden away. Everyone's happy, even the cats.

I mean come on, what cat wouldn't like a lighted litter box with some privacy? :)

edit:
While designing this my wife and I discussed the possibility of putting this on an exterior wall and putting the box outside. Of course that would mean some insulation and maybe some siding to match the house, but the point is, it doesn't necessarily need to go in the garage or start in a bathroom, that's just easier.

I have got to show my daughter this. I wish I could think of a way to do it at her house. It would keep the stupid dog out of it. (you don't want to know).

I did roughly the same idea in my old house in Georgia, but I didn't frame the door entrance or build a box since it went straight into the laundry room where I already kept the litter box. I wish I could do something similiar in my new house, but so far, haven't come up with any good ideas of where to exactly put the cat litter box or the doorway. I'll figure it out eventually.

i've got a "hidden" litter box as well - it beats the hell out of the traditional exposed kind.

but this passage through the bathroom is SWEET. i love how the molding matches and everything. very nice work on this.

What an inventive solution! Love it! Considering combining two ideas (yours and http://lumberjocks.com/projects/36291) by placing the entry hole in the back for entry from the next room (guest bathroom) and using the countertop and drawer space in the adjacent laundry room. :)
