Project Information

Weighing in at 1lb 10oz's is the block plane made for the 2015 Hand Plane and Spoke Shave Swap. Its body is Lignum Vita and sloe is Brazilian Cherry. I used the Veritas Norris style adjuster with a 0-1 iron. I like that kit. Great instructions.
A good friend gave me some boards and after the Lumberjocks identified and suggested I use it to make a plane the idea of what I was going to make popped in my head. Dovetail sole. I made a box joint style jig using a dovetail bit on my router table. Once it was dialed in my test pieces and prototype joined up nicely. I did get some blow out on the swap plane. I used front and back backer strips to support the cut. Wild grain? A little epoxy and sawdust and the fix is not too noticeable. I took my time with chopping out the mouth. Sharp chisels and keeping the plane clamped down tight reduced the tear out. The finish is oil and wax. I love the grain and color of the Lignum Vita. Future projects with the remaining piece?
The plane went to Sam aka"Babieca". I hope he gets to use it on future projects.

Very clean work, Dan. Love the dovetailed sole and the screw cap. Is that a Veritas blade and adjuster?

That plane is beautiful. I'm wondering why you went with a different wood for the sole, since the lignum is about as hard and smooth as it gets… the dovetailing sure looks great, though. I kind of want to build one of those veritas kits too, having a full adjuster on a wood bodied plane seems nice.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.
Rick, the grain from that board is crazy. I book matched the side pieces. The colors in the wood are nice too. I'd use it again.

Allen, I used the BC for contrast. It should hold up pretty good. the veritas adjuster is a nice set up. I might order one for the prototype. That one is ash, walnut with a BC sole. Thanks again.

Was finally able to get out in the garage and play around with this beauty last night. I just grabbed a piece of maple from the scrap pile and made shavings for a half an hour.

It feels really great in the hand and takes a lovely shaving. The Veritas adjuster is much more sensitive than the Stanley bench planes I'm used to, turning it just a few degrees makes a real difference. I'm sure it will feel like second nature soon.
