Showcase cover image for Lego box

Project Information

My stepson wanted a lego box to keep some of his things in. We discussed it and decided to make it with a drawer. Everything turned out great until I made the rookie mistake of painting the drawer and inside the box where the drawer goes. Since that didn't work we decide to make it a shelf.
Both lego's are exactly 12 times scale. I took some scrap pcs. of 1/2 in. plywood and used my router table to plane 4 pcs. to 1/4 in. thick. I then drilled a hole in the center of 2 pcs. I then set up a jig on the router table to rout out slots in all 4 pcs. The back pcs. are not routed through so that the screw slides within the slots. Next I glued the pcs. together and screwed them to the back of the box. Now it hangs in his bedroom and displays his lego figurines. Happy accident.
The lego's are made of 3/4 in. thick shelving board. They are painted with Krylon Color Creations acrylic latex enamel gloss indoor/ outdoor paint. Finished with 3 coats Minwax Water-Based Polycrylic clear gloss.

Brandon,

Looks like you specialize in making lemonade out of lemons. Nice save. I like the idea of a Lego box it shows some real imagination on your part or on your son's part. Keep boxing and thanks for sharing.

Looks like they turned out pretty nice. I can see how the high gloss paint would cause problems for a drawer. You have inspired me to move forward on a similar project for my nephew. He has a gazillion Legos and I thought that making him a Lego like box would be the perfect storage for them.

Thanks! I am glad you guys like it so much. My stepson and I really like it too. It was his idea for the lego, I pretty much just asked him if it would be alright to make certain changes. He is 10 and absolutely loves lego's. So much even that my 6 year old daughter is getting into them. Looks like I will be making more in the future. So happy I could inspire someone.
