Project Information

So I will be investing some time making one of these for my girlfriend as a house-warming gift very soon and this was my "test run". I had no idea how it would turn out because I don't own a drill press and I only had a very dull paddle bit. I have since invested in a new forstner bit and a few other goodies.

The test run stock was salvaged from a pallet I picked up for free from a local art shop (It was stamped 'HT' for heat treated and was mostly good hardwoods). I think the wood is birch or poplar - feel free to correct me if I am mistaken. I was completely amazed at the beauty of the wood after I ran it through the planer!

Once I had it planed down and sanded, I took it to my co-worker's house and had it laser etched with a Fleur De Lis on the front and my signature on the back. I'm glad this was just a test run because the wood wasn't centered when the laser started.

It turned out better than I thought so I gave it to my mom for mother's day. I finished it off after the etching with 440 grit sand paper and 2 coats of Polycrylic.

The next one I plan to make will be made of Black Walnut and Cherry with the bottle running parallel to the counter…at least that's the plan right now. Comments and suggestions always welcome.

I liked the design. I would like access to a laser. You may want to look at my page for the project "It is all in the jig". It will help you make them very quick and easy.

Thanks Martyroc
Thanks Bearpaw. I did see your jig and hope to do something like that for the next one I mentioned in the post. That will definitely make it much easier and more precise to cut several for Christmas this year.
