Project Information

A few years ago, I was shipping a lot of items. I wanted a larger size tape dispenser that uses standard size shipping tape. The only ones I could find were over $50. I decided to design my own. I ended up making many of them as family gifts. They are especially popular for wrapping Christmas gifts.

I made them out of pine. I painted on the stain and did not wipe it off. I then sealed it with polyurethane. This is about the only finishing method that works well for me on pine.

I bought the steel cutting edges from a shipping packaging supply firm,

I recently entered the design into Google Sketchup, and uploaded it to the Warehouse. You can download a copy here.

Great Idea, I did a similar one for my big roll of Blue tape. Mines not finished but I did use a broken hacksaw blade to cut the tape. This looks good.

Thanks for the post.

I looked for one at Office Max recently and they had nothing for large tape rolls.

I need to make one of these, I loath the stupid tape dispenser packing tape normally comes in, loath it with a passion.

Just the other day I was saying to myself, "self, you need to make a tape dispenser". Thank you for posting this. I have some pine out in the shop that would work quite nicely for a project like this.

This is really nice. Did you put something in it for weight, or does just the heft of the item keep it steady for one handed use? I need to make one of these. In addition, the "not wiped off" stain idea needs to work its way into my shop. Thanks so much.

Dale, I gatto have one like that on my desk, just the scotch tape type though.
Can we get a stapler to go with it?
Thanks for the post.

Handy-Dandy! A hacksaw blade also works well as a cutter. Congrats on the top-3 badge also
