Project Information
This is my Krenov Style Cabinet I made for my Grade 10 major project for school!!!! It is constructed all out of Tasmanian Oak (Australian hardwood) with the door pulls being made out of Jarrah (another Australian hardwood).
This was quite a challenging project for me seeing it is the second piece of furniture I have EVER made (first being a tiny little bedside table). Its dimensions are 1680mm high x 600mm wide x 300mm deep.
The glass for the doors was saved from the side of the road, I cut it to size and inserted it into a groove I routed with the 'festool router' (OoOoo fancy). And the back of the cabinet is constructed with the 'frame and panel' technique (cause I'm lazy). Instead of having the traditional flared legs, I made them square (even more fancy) and so then I kept that squarish look throughout the cabinet. I also added a cross bar at the bottom of the legs for two reasons, one being it would square it all up and the second reason being it would make it a bit more stable. I would of loved to have nice brass knife hinges BUT as they are not available down under (not that I know of), so I had to resort to some chrome 'no mortise' hinges (with fancy finial thingies on the ends!!!) which costed $15 each…. thats too much for a few chunks of metal in my opinion. If I ordered knife hinges from the U.S it would of bloody costed me $150 AU at the least. The glass shelves are 6mm thick with polished edges and I got them from… ah…. cough cough I've got connections cough cough. All the timber costed about $200, It would of costed heaps more if I made it more 'proper' but hey, it stands as a cabinet and it does its job!
All in all this project was a massive challenge and after having only half the time all the other students, I completed it (after many many days spent working on it during after school hours), and I happened to get the highest mark in the year group 98/100 an A!
