Gorgeous cabinet. Nice dovetail work and the pulls are fabulous. I love how the combination of woods work together.

Great wood, lovely details, i.e. handles etc. My only nitpick is the dovetails?? under the cabinet doors…to my eye (and it is just my eye) they break up the sleek front of this lovely cabinet. (my opinion is worth what you paid for it) It is a real nice piece & I think you've done a great job

I don't for a second feel qualified to tell you what is right or wrong with this project. IMHO, I think it is absolutely gorgeous. I mostly make boxes and one of the hardest parts for me is the handles. The handles on this are just fantastic. The overall design, wood combo and finish are beautiful.
I would have to agree with michelletwo on the dovetails under the doors.
This is something I would be proud to have in my home. I think the fact that it was favorited by Dennis should tell you all you need to know.

I really like the leg shape, alot. Very graceful curve. YOU ASKED FOR IT! I actually like the back wood better than the door panel wood and think that combination would have worked better. The panel makes the walnut show too purple. DUDE, what is up with that hardware. You built a $4000 + cabinet, you might need to spend 100 dollars on nice brass hardware. SOSS would hard worked well. One more thing, before you call me an asshole, the wine rack is great for a utilitarian piece but it makes the piece look very heavy. I would love to see a pic with it removed. Krenov, I feel, used the stands to draw the eye to the top. Your craftsmanship is top notch. I love the door pulls, great detail. What is the combination. Black walnut and American Walnut? BW in the panel?

Ironically I'm in the middle of designing one of those myself. however I plan on having the bottles IN the cabinet to keep them out of sunlight, and in a more temperature controlled environment - this however calls the cabinet to be very deep, which at present moment doesn't work too well with proportions. still have to work some more on the details - looking at your piece reminds me what it SHOULD look like!

Magnificent. The details and craftsmanship are apparent. The branded logo is a nice touch. I would've liked to see the legs flare out to a thicker base as an Asian influence. As elegant and graceful as your legs are, I think it looks a bit top heavy. That's probably because of the cabinet. As I look at the pics again, the legs would be perfect if the base was a stand-alone piece.

For future pieces, you could almost go with Maloof-shaped legs blending into the stretchers, which would give it a completely different look, while almost being the exact same piece. I think a very dark wood for the pulls would be very attractive (i.e. ebony, ebonized walnut, etc.).

The top cabinet looks like it's made from different species than the base, but your writeup doesn't indicate that. Is it because the wood was naturally different and there was no staining in your finish?

If you want constructive criticism … maybe you shouldn't build pieces that look so damned outstanding.

I think your piece is great, I do have a problem with all the 'Krenov would be proud comments'.
mostly because I seriously doubt anyone who knew him or trained with him would say that.
after training in his way of doing things, this piece's only resemblance to Krenov is that it is a cabinet on a stand.

you asked for criticism because you want to do this as a profession, so here it is.
-you ignored grain graphics, slash grain on the legs, slash on the wine rack, flatsawn on the back panel. it stands out, suggests movement, and the eye notices.
-the cabinet proportions are large for the stand. giving it a heavy look.
-the hinges are obvious and glaring, knife hinges should be used here.
-you attached the carcasse with sliding dovetails, doweling would have been better, as with a sliding dovetail does allow wood movement, the glue joint will break on wide panels. (maybe a stopped spline)
-your edges are sharp , and need to be softened, no-one likes to touch sharp edges on furniture.
-molding, though not wrong, is not what Jim used. if he wanted a curve at the top, he would have shaped the top or side panel.
-you did not pre finish before glue-up. you can tell a piece finished after by all the finish stuck in the tight parts and around joints. a professional piece is pre finished, waxed around anywhere glue may squeeze out, then glued together. the wax stops the glue from sticking where it is not wanted.
-no idea why you have notches in the bottom panel below the doors. but I don't think it looks good.

you did get some things right
-the consecutive cut drawer fronts, great job.
-I like the pulls.
-the drawers in the stand. a nice addition.
I have to say, you are way ahead of where I was before I went to school. and learning on your own is commendable. but some professional training goes a long way. I didn't know how much I didn't know.

I don't feel qualified to comment on design aspects, but fine craftsmanship! Welcome to the world of oil finishing. It brings out the true beauty of the wood.
