Project Information
The long-term goal is to build a knockdown trestle dining room table, but I didn't have any real experience building tables, let along trestle tables. In order to practice the techniques and joinery, I made a scaled-down version in the form of this coffee table.
It is mostly hard white maple, with cherry and walnut accents. All of the wood came from a local sawmill. The table-top boards are also reinforced with dowels, using a quick shop-made jig for alignment (got the idea from David Picciuto).
It is finished with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Oil & Urethane Topcoat Satin.

The wife loves it, and we are now making final decisions on wood types and patterns for the future dining room table.
I'm VERY pleased with how strong and sturdy this table is. I was a bit skeptical of trestle tables, but I could breakdance on this coffee table and it wouldn't be phased a bit.
