Project Information

Hello all and Happy New Year,
It has been a while since I last posted a project but I finally finished a kitchen island with a wine rack for my son and his wife. It was truly a learning experience. The butcher block top is hard Maple which turned out to be the easier part of the project. Most of my difficultly was with the wine rack. I made the mistake of constructing the carcass first and then trying to construct the wine rack inside the opening. That was the challenge. First I placed the front and rear racks in the cabinet and tested it with a wine bottle. Some wine bottles fit perfectly but others fell through the opening. Then I had to add the runners to hold any size bottles. After a lot of trial and error I finally got them to work. Next was trying to spray paint the interior of the rack. I have a turbo sprayer with canister and it was to large for the opening. It took a while but finally completed the spraying process. Like I said it was a learning process and next time, if there is a next time, I would make the wine rack first, paint it, install it into the cabinet and then add the face frame. Overall I was happy with the project, learned a lot and the kids are now enjoying their new island. I hope you enjoy.

Very nice, I really like the contrast between the white base and the natural maple top. It really makes it a focal point. I made one very similar to this for my sister a few months back and I plan on posting the pictures soon. Great Job!

Hello Elvin

I love it

A good contrast between the top and the base and a good idea in front with the false door
Just a question

How do you do to open the drawers without buttons ?
Thanks a lot for sharing

I love it! What method did you use to smooth/flatten the butcher block top?

I actually had a very similar idea just the other day. My plan is to build just the wine rack portion, but also with maple butcher block top. I was also thinking to incorporate FaTToaD's wine cork displays as the sides of the rack. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/35669

Here was my thought:

Digger-jack,
Good question! My son and his wife did not purchase the hardware for the door and drawers at the time I installed the cabinet, so I took the picture as is.
MGoBlue7,
Your picture is a neat project. I used hard maple, end grain up and cut them a little longer then the length of the island. I then glued several lengths together in approximately 11" widths to easily fit into my plainer. When I had the width I needed, I planed them all at the same time and when I reached the desired height I glued these segments together. After they dried I scraped away any glue and used a finish sander to complete the top and bottom. Then applied several coats of mineral oil. I hope this helps.
